How to use Lawn Fawn's 'keep on swimming' to make a cute birthday card
I needed to make a birthday card for my friend who is really into cats and knitting. I've always wanted to try a reveal wheel card, so combined that with the 'meow you doin'?' and 'keep on swimming' Lawn fawn stamp and die sets.
It's a little bit fiddly this card but I hope you agree the end card is worth it.

You will need the following to make the one cat card:
- Lawn Fawn - Reveal heel
- Lawn Fawn - Reveal wheel keep on swimming add-on
- Lawn Fawn - Keep on swimming stamp sets
- Lawn Fawn - Keep on swimming die set
- Lawn Fawn - Reveal wheel sentiments stamp set
- Balck ink pad
- Promarkers - honeycomb, henna, cinnamon, blue pearl and sandstone
- Patterned papers – one beige for the wall and a blue for the carpet. (I used some papers that I printed onto card from https://www.nitwitcollections.com/shop/ – bg-dkblue from Land Ho collection and bg-dotscream from Cottage Garden collection)
- Sandy/beige A4 card
- White card
- Stamping aid such as Stamparatus or Misti (not essential but it helps)
- Tiny brad
- A greeting stamp (I used one from Lawn Fawn's 'Meow you Doin?')
To make the card with the extra cat and balls of wool, you will need the following extras:
- Lawn Fawn - Meow you Doin'? stamp set
- Lawn Fawn - Meow you Doin'? die set
- Promarkers - Sky blue, cool grey1, cool grey 2, pale pink, antique pink and meadow green.
- Ink pads - green, blue and pinky/red (I used stampin up - wild wasabi, island indigo and rose red)
- Add the reveal wheel goldfish bowl to the reveal wheel plate (I used a little washi tape to hold it in place) and then cut it out of blue patterned paper, beige patterned paper and white card.
- Take off the goldfish bowl add on part and cut another reveal wheel plate out of white card – this will be used for the backing.
- Stamp the table, goldfish bowl and cat that is looking away. If you want extra cats on your card, you can also stamp the playing cat or sleeping cat aswell. (I stamped all of them but then chose to use the cat looking away and the playing cat only)
- Cut the large reveal wheel and the small backing reveal wheel from white card. If you have the Lawn Fawn reveal wheel template you can use it here to stamp the small fish, small and large puffer fish onto the reveal wheel. I do not have this template so made my own:
- I cut another large reveal wheel
- I drew with pencil onto the reveal wheel, 3 equally spaced lines using a protractor with 120 degree space between them
- I measured from the small hole in the centre 4mm out along each line
- I used a goldish bowl shape that came out of the cuts in point 1, to draw the goldfish bowls onto my circle. I folded the goldfish bowl shape in half to find the centre line and lined this up with the 120 degree pencil lines drawn earlier. Make sure the base of the goldfish bowl is 4mm from centre hole.
- Position your reveal wheel on a stamping aid (mine is stamparatus from stampin up) and pin it down with a magnet.
- Lay the template you just made ontop of the reveal wheel on your stamping aid. Position the fish dies within the goldfish bowls.
- Being careful not to jog them, fold the plastic sheet over to pick the stamps up. Remove your card template so just your blank reveal wheel is on your stamping aid with the fish stamps on the plastic page. Ink the fish up with black ink and stamp onto the reveal wheel.
- Colour the stamped images using any colouring medium you prefer (On the reveal wheel there is a slight embossed line around near the outside edge – don’t colour over this line (see the below image):
- Use the dies to cut out your stamped images. You might want to use a piece of washi tape to hold the die in place – especially for the wool strands as they are very small.
- You should now have all of the following pieces (if you are making a single cat card you will not need the playing cat and balls of wool and wool strands):
- It’s now time to start putting your card together. Glue the beige patterned paper to the white identical piece (this just helps make it stronger especially if you have used a beige paper)
- Cut the blue patterned paper 4.5cm up from the bottom and glue this piece to the bottom of the beige paper
- Glue the goldfish bowl and table onto the beige card as shown below. Put foam pads onto the back of the forward facing cat and also attach to the card.
- Put this card into your stamping aid and align the greeting of your choice so it will stamp across the top of your card. I used ‘Happy Purrthday’ from the Lawn Fawn – Meow You Doin’ stamp set.
- Now to start making the reveal wheel part. Put a small brad through the small reveal wheel circle then in through the back of the fish stamped reveal wheel so the brads feet will show on the front of the fish picture.
- You may need to trim the ends off the brad legs so they do not show through the goldfish bowl on the front of the card. Don’t cut the whole leg off, just the tip.
- Put foam pads on the small reveal wheel
- This now needs to be stuck to the white card cut in step 2 using the foam pads on the back of the small reveal wheel (I gently laid it down (without pressing the foam pads too hard and laid the front of the card on top to make sure the large puffer fish showed correctly in the goldfish bowl on the front of the card. Move it about until this happens)
- Put foam pads all over the backing card making sure you do not get them too close to the reveal wheel:
- Use these foam pads to stick the front of the card to this backing
- Cut the A4 sandy/beige coloured card in half to make it A5 then fold it in half to make a card.
- Glue the card from step 17 to the front of the sandy/beige card
- Use the ‘turn me’ stamp from the reveal wheel sentiments set to stamp with black ink near to the edge of the reveal wheel:
- This is a finished card and by turning the reveal wheel in the direction of the arrow the fish puffs up!
- I wanted to add extra detail to my card so continued by adding the cat and balls of wool as per the below:
NOTE: make sure your fish are in the correct order – not as shown above (for my first attempt I did it wrong!). The little puffer fish needs to be on the left of the small fish. The large puffer fish therefore needs to be on the right of the small fish. If you do it wrong like me, once you have built your card together your small fish will not grow gradually!! Make sure yours looks like:
This is a really fun card. I hope you've enjoyed how to make it. Happy crafting :)
