Candle tree decoration

Candle tree decoration made from folded card

This is such a cute tree decoration that can be made quite quickly. I saw a photo in Pinterest which I fell in love with but then couldn't find the instructions to make them. I studied the picture and decided to have a go making them myself. They are quite easy and I'm really pleased with the finished result so decided to post the instructions for you guys to make.

Follow the below link to find out how I made these lovely little candle decorations.

You will need
  • A4 Coloured card for the candle stem (about 160gram - nothing too thick. I used red)
  • Yellow/orange card for the flame
  • Wire for the wick (you could use pipe cleaners or even just cardboard)
  • Gold card
  • Tiny wooden pegs (about 3cm in length)
  • Fancy edge square die about 4 . 5cm square. (If you don't have a square die you can use circle or oval or just cut a square using scissors or a guillotine)
  • Guillotine
  • Glue
  • Double sided tape
  • Mini hole punch or large needle
  • Wire cutters

  1. Cut two flame shapes per candle out of the yellow or orange card. They need to be identical in size and shape but a mirror reflection of each other. About 4cm high by 3cm wide. (I used an svg file I downloaded for my silhouette cutting machine to cut my flames - the file was purchased from the silhouette website - candle by Sophie Gallo. Design id 52678)

  2. Cut a piece of wire about 4cm in length and bend the base to turn it into an L shape

  3. Put glue on the back of one of the flame pieces and place the wire ontop so the bottom of the L is showing out of the bottom of the flame. (if you are using cardboard instead of wire, ensure it is thick card, stable enough to hold a flame up)
cut out yellow card to make the flame

  4. Stick the other flame ontop of the flame that you had put the wire on and press it down to ensure they stick together.

  5. Cut the card that you have selected for the candle stem into long strips 2 . 5cm wide. You will need two long strips per candle.

  6. Glue the very end of one of the pieces of card and stick the other ontop of it at right angles.

  7. I have labelled the strips A and B to try and make explaining the folding process a little easier! Fold strip A upwards and over strip B and press flat. (The fold line is shown in the below photo by dotted lines)
start folding the strips over each other - A over B

  8. Fold strip B over strip A so it goes from right to left. Press flat. (the fold line is shown by a dotted line in the below photo)
start folding the strips over each other - B over A

  9. Keep folding the card, A over B then B over A until you have used the whole strip. You may have a little bit of card left at the end of the strips that won't form another whole fold- just trim them off
Finished folding with extra flaps that need cutting off

  10. Make a small hole in the centre of the top flap of the candle stem using a hole punch or large needle. If you have used card instead of wire for the wick, you will probably have to cut a slot in the top flap rather than a hole.
Make a hole in top of candle for flame

  11. Put double sided tape around the hole on the underneath of the top flap

  12. Put the wire showing from the bottom of the flame into the hole and ensure it sticks down on a bit of the double sided tape.
    Fix flame in place

  13. Stick the top flap down sealing the wire inside the stem. Your candle should now look like the below photo.
Flame is now connected to candle stem

  14. Cut a 4 . 5cm square out of gold card
Use a die to cut out a base for candle to sit on

  15. stick the bottom of the candle centrally on the gold card just cut out.
    Candle is fixed to base

  16. Stick a mini peg to the underside of the gold square as per the below picture
Attach peg to underneath of candle base

That's your finished candle decoration. Just peg it onto a branch of your Christmas tree.
