How to make two versions of this card - one with Stampin' Up! 'Snow globe scenes dies' and the other made from scratch using nesting dies
This week I got out the 'snow globe scenes dies' by Stampin' Up! to make a selection of Christmas cards. Whilst I was making them, I realised that at some point I will run out of the 'snow globe shaker domes' so also attempted a snow globe card just using layering dies and acetate.
I think both ways work.
So I'm going to show you how to make both of them.
Follow the below link to find out how the cards were made
The card I will show you how to make is the Christmas Hedgehog but as you saw from the above picture, you can make these cards using any stamps you have as long as they fit within the shaker dome window.
So to make the Stampin' Up! Snow globe card you will need:
- Snow globe scenes dies by Stampin' Up!
- Snow globe Shaker Dome by Stampin' Up!
- Snowflake sequins by Stampin' Up!
- White 6" x 6" card blank
- A4 piece of silver holographic card
- Small amount of silver card or paper
- Pale blue card
- A4 piece of white card
- Brown, green, red, very pale blue and black ink pads (I used Stampin' Up! inkpads - chocolate chip, garden green, rose red. Versa Magic inkpad- Aspen mist (very pale blue) and a black inkpad from Hobbycraft)
- Hedgehugs stamp set by Stampin' Up!
- Snow Place stamp set by Stampin' Up!
- Ready for Christmas Stamp set by Stampin' Up!
- Colouring medium of your choosing - I used Promarkers - cinnamon and ruby)
- Guillotine
- Die cutting machine
- Glue
- Double sided tape
- Double sided foam pads
To make the snow globe card using nesting dies you will need:
- Two circle dies about 1 cm apart in size (I used 7 . 5 cm and 6 . 5 cm circle dies)
- A rectangle die about 6 . 5 cm by 4 . 5 cm or just use a guillotine to cut a similar size rectangle
- White card base about 6" x 4"
- Holographic silver card
- White card
- Silver card
- Acetate
- Embossing folder - pattern of your choosing
- Small sequins
- A stamp set of your choosing as long as the image fits within the 6 . 5 cm circular window (I used Snow Place by Stampin' Up! and the corresponding Snow Friends Dies)
- Ink pads (I used a black ink pad from Hobbycraft, Versa Magic - Aspen mist and Stampin' up! - crumb cake and rose red ink pads)
- Colouring medium of your choice (I used Promarkers - Honeycomb, sandstone and pale pink)
- Glue, double sided foam pads and double sided tape
The first one I will show you how to make is the Christmas Hedgehog Stampin' Up! snow globe:
- Cut the pale blue card down to 10cm high by 11cm wide
- Cut the A4 white card down to 13cm square
- Using the snow globe die from the die set, cut it out of the white card about 2cm from the top and about 3 cm in from the edge
- Stamp 3 green trees (from Ready for Christmas stamp set) on to the pale blue card and stamp random snowflakes (from Snow Place stamp set) using Versa Magic Aspen Mist across the white card
- Remove the protective layer from the glue strip around the front of a Snow globe shaker dome and stick it to the back of the white card so it shows through as per the above photo.
- Stamp and colour a hedgehog and Christmas hat onto white card.
- Cut out the hedgehog and hat, glue them together and then stick the hedgehog onto the pale blue card so he is near the top of the trees. (Tip - try to not let any glue seep out from beneath the hedgehog - if it does rub it away as otherwise your sequins will stick to it. I had to re-make my hedgehog card as once I'd put it all together the sequins were stuck all around his edge and you couldn't really see what the image was meant to be! Learn from my mistakes : ) )
- Remove the lining paper from the back of the shaker dome and stick over the hedgehog image
- Cut out the base of the snow globe using the dies in the snow globe scenes set - the solid base from the holographic card and the filigree base from silver card. Glue the filigree on top of the solid base.
- Cut a 14 cm square from the holographic silver card and stick it centrally to the front of the white card blank.
- Stick the hedgehog shaker piece made in point 8 centrally over the holographic silver card on the card base
- Using double sided foam pads, stick the snow globe base to the front of the card just underneath the dome
Hey presto - first snow globe card. I was really pleased with it so made 3 more with varying different characters in them - personalised for the people I will be giving them to.
I am now going to show you how to make a snow globe using nesting dies:
- Using two circular dies, place one inside the other, equally spaced apart, and cut of silver card
- Using the larger circular die, cut out a circle from acetate and stick to the back of the silver circle you have just cut out
- Using the rectangular die, cut out a rectangle from the silver card and then run it through your machine in an embossing folder to give it some pattern
- Glue the rectangle to the lower edge of the silver circle as per the below photo
- Put double sided foam pads right around the back of the silver circle, ensuring there is no gap so the sequins will not escape. Put some foam pads on the base piece as well.
- Cut the white card down to 9cm wide by 13 . 5 cm high and stamp snowflakes onto it using pale blue ink.
- Cut the holographic silver card down to 9 . 5 cm wide by 14cm high and stick it to the card base
- Stick the white card decorated with snowflakes, on top of the holographic card on the card base
- Using the larger circle die, cut one out of white card
- Stamp, colour and cut out your image - I used the penguin, scarf and ice cream from the Snow Place stamp set
- Stick your penguin with scarf and ice cream to the centre of the white circle that you just cut out
- Place some sequins on top of your penguin image. Pull the backing off all the foam pads that are around the silver circle and stick this on top of the circle with the penguin on.
- Put a little glue on the back of the circle, remove the backing from the rest of the foam pads on the base and stick it centrally onto the card front
That's your second snow globe card made. The penguin does look really cute and he just fits into the snow globe!
So now you know how to make some snow globe cards - let your imagination run wild - the globe can contain any image you wish as long as it's small enough. You could even make a birthday card snow globe with a cake in it and maybe put the sequins in that has the persons age on them. Or a wedding card with a couple in the snow globe and some sequins in the shape of bells!
Have fun crafting. x
