Exploding Chocolate Gift Box

This is a fun gift to make that I am sure will delight many

I am very excited about this make - goodness knows how the chocolate bars made it into the gift without me eating them all first! Valentines is now over so my attention is turning to Easter. I was browsing the internet and found an exploding chocolate gift box for sale - it was rather pricey so wondered if I could make my own - turns out I can. I found a few online instruction videos but struggled to find somewhere that gave me the sizes - not only that I wanted to make it with items I have in my crafting supplies, rather than purchasing larger sheets of card.

So here are my instructions for making an Exploding Chocolate Gift Box. It uses double sided 12 x 12 scrapbooking card so you can adjust it to suit any occasion. You could put wrapped biscuits and teabags or even slip a gift card into the gift. The chocolate bars can't be any bigger than about 9cm in length - the ones I have picked for this gift are the multi-pack bars such as Cadbury Dairy Milk 29.3g x 9 bars.

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • Four sheets of 12" x 12" double sided scrapbooking card
  • Chocolate bars or sweets for your gift
  • Ribbon
  • Guillotine with a scoring blade
  • Strong double sided tape and glue

  1. Decide which 12 x 12 card you wish to be the outside of your box and score from every edge at 4 ". This is the box base. Fold along the score lines

  2. Decide which 12 x 12 card you wish to be the lid, cut it to form a square measuring 8" and score from every edge 1 15/16".

  3. Cut the four corner squares from the outside box layer as per the below photo. Cut the lid on the solid lines as shown in the below photo. Fold along the score lines of the lid (shown in the photo as dotted lines).

  4. Take another piece of 12 x 12 card for the middle layer and cut it to 10 6/8 " square. Then score 4 " from each edge. Cut out the four corner squares as per the outside box piece in point 3. Fold along the score lines

  5. Take your final piece of 12 x 12 card for the smallest layer and cut it to 9 7/8 " square. Then score it 4 " from each edge. Cut out the four corner squares as per the outside box piece in point 3. Fold along the score lines

  6. Lay the middle layer ontop of the outside box piece at an angle and then the smallest layer ontop also at an angle as per the below photo. Glue them together but only put glue on the central square of each piece as the outside edges need to fold up to create box edges.
Glue each of the box pieces together on an angle

  7. Put a piece of strong double sided tape on the back of each chocolate bar and stick them to the box side flaps.

  9. I have added some lollipops to the box and as they are round, they are harder to stick to the flaps. For these I cut a piece of card the same colour as the flap you wish to attach them to. Using double sided tape stick some ribbon on the back of the card then stick the whole thing onto the flap. You can now tie the lollipops in.
Cut a piece of card to cover flap

    Attach ribbons to the card

add the card to the flaps to tie in the lollipops

  10. Once you have attached all of your chocolates or sweets, fold up the flaps of each section starting with the smallest inside box first. Put the lid on. This holds it altogether. As my card is not particularly thick, the weight of the chocolates make the sides bulge a little. I tie a long piece of ribbon right around the box to hold it all together.
Pull all of the flaps up to create the box
Put the lid on and then tie a piece of ribbon around

Now when your recipient receives the box they will remove the ribbon, pull off the lid and the box will fall open displaying all of the goodies inside. : )

You can add more decoration to the box if you wish. If you use quite patterned paper you may feel it doesn't need any more decoration.

Anyway, have fun with this one and try not to eat all of the chocolates before they end up in your gift !
