A cup full of Happy Birthday

Stamping onto patterned paper creates decorative images to use in your cards

Rather than the usual stamping an image onto white card and then colouring it in, why don't you stamp onto patterned paper? That's what I am showing you in this weeks card. If you have a stamp that has a big bare space such as the cup and teapot I'm using, it's ideal for this sort of technique. Just find your favourite papers, stamp and cut out. Mat and layer to create this lovely birthday card:

You will need
  • Tea Party stamp set by Tattered Lace
  • Light blue card
  • Patterned paper
  • Double sided tape or glue
  • Double sided foam pads
  • Stamping aid (I am using the Stamparatus by stampin up)
  • Navy ink pad (I used Stampin up's nights of navy ink pad)
  • Craft knife
  • Navy sewing thread

  1. Cut a piece of blue card 21 cm by 14 . 8 cm. Fold it in half to create a C6 card base

  2. Cut a piece of patterned paper 14 cm by 10 cm and stick this centrally to the front of the card base

  3. Cut a piece of blue card 13 cm by 9 cm

  4. Put the 13 cm by 9 cm blue card in your stamping aid and stamp 'a cup full of ...' in the top left corner and 'birthday wishes' in the bottom right hand corner
stamp 'a cup full of' and 'Happy birthday' onto the card

  5. Stick this blue card centrally on the front of the card base

  6. Using your stamping aid, stamp a teapot and a cup onto patterned paper. I've used two slightly different but matching blue patterned papers. The reason I have used my stamping aid is that you can align the stamp on a particular part of the pattern paper to pick out a bit that you love or a bit that works well in the stamp. So for the cup, I aligned it so a circular piece of the paper shows in the main part of the cup stamp.

  7. Cut out your stamped images. Start by cutting out any inside bits first then go around the outside. So for the cup and teapot, use a knife and cut out the piece within the handle first.
    Cut out your stamped images

  8. Stamp two 'just for you' teabag tags onto blue card and cut them out

  9. Cut a small bit of navy thread, glue it in-between the two teabag tags so the wording remains on the outside.
stamp 'just for you' teabag tag twice onto blue card and cut out

  10. Cut the lid off the teapot and glue the other end of the thread on the wrong side of the teapot lid.
Add the tag to the teapot lid

  11. Put double sided foam pads on to the back of the teapot, teapot lid and teacup.

  12. Place the teacup in the bottom left corner on the front of the base card and the teapot and it's lid on the top right. Slant the teapot slightly so it looks like it's pouring. Make sure the lid is placed so it looks like it wasn't cut. The teabag tag will then dangle on the front of the teapot

By stamping onto patterned paper I haven't had to use any special colouring technique but the paper takes away the plainness. I've seen cards made with a lady's dress stamped onto patterned paper - it really looks effective.

You might find other stamps within your collection that would also work.

Happy crafting. X
