Monster Birthday

Add extra dimension to your card using Concord & 9th's Monster Love stamp and die set

I fell in love with this stamp set as you get so many stamps with the set that you can layer up to create different images - for example there are several different arms or tummys you can add to your monsters. I also love stamp sets that you can then die cut out as it makes creating your card such a doddle.

So this week I needed to create a card for my husbands birthday - I find male orientated cards always so difficult because the images I need to use are hard to find. When I saw the monster could hold a balloon it made sense to try and make the balloons attach to wire so they could stick above the base card to create an extra dimension.

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • Silver/grey glittery card
  • White card
  • Lawn Fawn stitched hillside borders die set
  • Concord & 9th Monster Love stamp set
  • Concord & 9th Monster Love die set
  • Happy Birthday greeting stamp or peel offs
  • Black ink pad
  • Versamark ink pad
  • White embossing powder (I used Wow Super fine opaque bright white)
  • Colouring medium of your choice (I used Promarkers - Cornflower and Satin)
  • Silver wire or pipe cleaners
  • Heat gun
  • Glue and double sided foam pads

  1. Cut a piece of the silver/grey glittery card to 21cm x 7cm and fold it in half to create your base card

  2. Using one of the hillside border dies lay it over your base card to cut through both layers at the same time so that your card measures about 6 . 5 cm on the left edge and about 4 cm on the right hand edge. You may wish to run it through the die twice to ensure it cuts through both layers
using L:awn Fawn stitched hillside border die to cut top of card

  3. Using the black ink pad, stamp the monster with tall legs, waving hand and holding hand onto white card. Stamp them all separately so they can be cut out individually

  4. Colour in the stamped images and cut them out using the dies

  5. Die cut 4 large hearts from the silver/grey glittery card

  6. Stamp 'Happy' onto one of the cut out hearts and 'Birthday' onto another using the Versamark ink pad. (I've used a Hero Arts 'Happy Birthday' wooden stamp to stamp my greeting onto two of the hearts - click here to be taken to my how to page to see how this was done)

  7. Cover your stamped words with embossing powder, shake off the excess and heat the words until the powder melts. (Tip - use a pair of long tweezers to hold your hearts whilst you heat them so you don't burn your fingers)

  8. Cut two pieces of wire, one about 14 cm and one about 10 cm. Glue a plain heart to the back of a heart with a greeting on but sandwich a piece of wire in between. This creates your balloons
attach wire to hearts to make them like balloons

  9. Glue the monsters hands to the body
add monsters arms to his body

  10. Position your monster on the card and where the balloons will need to go. Bend the wire so it comes together at his hand - twist the two wires together at this point.

  11. Put glue on the back of the monsters holding hand and lay the twisted part of the wire in the glue. Leave it to set
glue the balloon wires to the back of the monsters hand

  12. Put foam pads on the back of the monster and stick him to the silver/grey glittery base card.
The balloons now stick up above the card supported by the wires

Because you get so many stamps in the set you can design your monster however you feel - he could have two lots of hands on each side or only one hand. If you have children in your family, they would love this stamp set - I daren't show my youngest - I'd never get the stamp set back !

Anyway, have fun crafting.
