Watch the Birdie!

Use a digital downloaded image to create your own decoupage birthday card

Another male oriented birthday card and once again I struggled to find an appropriate image amongst my stash! I had a hunt on the internet and found a lovely and very appropriate image.
create a card using Lili of the Valley's Watch the Birdie digital image

If you use Google to search for digital stamps, there are loads to choose from. Some are free, some you have to pay a small amount for. Some are black and white images and some are already pre-coloured. (Please be careful of copyright issues)  In this case I found a pre-coloured image and paid a small amount to be able to download it. Once downloaded you can print to your hearts content. This particular download was in PDF format and came in varying sizes.

As you can keep printing those images, you can cut parts out of the different images to create the decoupage image.

Follow the below link to find out how this card was made:

You will need
  • Lili of the Valley full colour 'Watch the Birdie' digital stamp (you can get the image here for a small price)
  • White card
  • Dark brown card
  • Brown mottled card
  • C6 white card base
  • Rectangular die 8 cm by 11 . 5 cm (If you don't have one of these you can just use a guillotine to cut around your image)
  • White Happy Birthday peel off
  • Glue and double sided foam pads

  1. Print the 'watch the birdie' image onto white card (print the PDF page that has just the four images on it)

  2. Use the rectangular die to cut out one of the images

  3. From another image cut out the bird and the inner square of the camera with the cable but only as far as the hand

  4. Cut the camera lens from one of the other images. You should now have these pieces:
create your own decoupage pieces from the images printed

  5. Cut the dark brown card to 10 cm by 14 cm and stick it to the front of the card base

  6. Cut the mottled brown card to 9 . 5 cm by 13 . 5 cm and stick centrally ontop of the dark brown card

  7. Stick the rectangular image, cut out in step 2, onto the mottled brown card slightly more to the top so there is enough space underneath for the peel off. Add the peel off.
Add brown card mounts to the base card

  8. Put double sided tape onto the back of the camera and a tiny amount of glue onto the end of the cable (near where the hand would have been). Add this to the card ontop of the image to create the decoupage look. The glue at the end of the cable makes it look like the cable is coming out of his hand.
    Start adding your decoupage layers

glue the cable end close to hand

  9. Put double sided tape on the back of the lens and bird and layer onto the image

You could cut more layers from images to make your decoupage stand out further. Be careful not to make it too deep if you intend on posting it. There are all sorts of digital images out there that you can use in a similar fashion. Just remember when cutting layers, what you wish to stand out or emphasise or would be most closest to you in a real life situation, is the smallest layer that goes on last.

Another example of a digital image being used to make a card was a car my son printed and coloured to make a birthday card for his dad. We didn't decoupage it but it was cut out and layered onto a background he made using the Brushos.  (If you want to learn how to make the brusho background click here as i used this technique to create a background for my birthday card)
