No matter the weather we're friends forever

How to make a colour changing umbrella that's sure to put a smile on anyone's face

Here in the UK, rainbows have been appearing in lots of house windows to represent unity, support the NHS and remind us of hope that the virus won't restrict us forever. So with this in mind, this week I have made a rainbow colour changing umbrella card.
Colourful umbrella on dotty card base with reveal wheel that changes the colour

This card is based on the reveal wheel idea with the rainbow colours being added to the wheel. I've used Stampin' Up's 'Under my Umbrella' stamp set but actually the colourful reveal wheel would work with any small stamp you have - it could be a multicoloured leaf, flower or cat !

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • White 12 . 5 cm square card base
  • White A4 card
  • 11 . 5 cm square piece of dotty patterned card or paper (if you don't have any you could create a background of your own by stamping the rain drops from the stamp set randomly over some card)
  • A small piece of acetate (just big enough for the umbrella stamp to fit)
  • Under My Umbrella stamp set by Stampin Up
  • Reveal wheel die set by lawn fawn
  • Reveal wheel square add on die by lawn fawn
  • Tiny brad
  • Black StazOn ink pad
  • Black ink pad (mine came from Hobbycraft)
  • Purple, pink, yellow, green and blue ink pads (I used stampin Ups - perfect plum, melon mambo, crushed curry, wild wasabi and island indigo)
  • Finger daubers or sponges
  • A stamping block and a stamping aid (I used the Stamparatus by Stampin Up)
  • Craft knife and self healing mat
  • Double sided foam pads and either glue or double sided tape
  • Die cutting machine

  1. Cut out two square reveal wheel bases from white card

  2. Using the black StazOn ink pad, stamp the open umbrella from the stamp set onto the acetate
Use StazOn to stamp the open umbrella top onto acetate

  3. Using the black ink pad, lightly stamp the open umbrella onto the front of one of the square reveal wheel bases - to get the correct placement of this: lay the metal reveal wheel centrally (this shows where your coloured wheel will reach on your card). Put the clean umbrella stamp onto the stamping block and place it on the metal reveal wheel, where you would like it to go (make sure that stamp remains inside the reveal wheel and slightly away from the edges and centre spot). Once happy with placement, put another piece of card along the top edge of your block but laying on the card below so you know where to align your stamping block to. Remove the stamping block and reveal wheel without moving the square reveal wheel base or the card you are using for placement of your block..  Ink the stamp and using the placement card, line up your stamp and stamp the umbrella lightly onto the reveal wheel card. See below photos
using the metal reveal wheel work out where the umbrella is to be stamped

Using a piece of card line the stamping block up and stamp the umbrella image

  4. Using the craft knife, carefully cut the umbrella out - make sure you cut around the outside of the black lines. It doesn't matter if you go a few millimetres outside the line as long as no lines show on the card that's left
Use a craft knife to cut out the umbrella

  5. Using your stamping aid and your purple ink pad, stamp the umbrella handle and greeting onto the card which you just cut the umbrella from
Use stamparatus to line up the umbrella handle and greeting

  6. Stick the acetate with the umbrella image on, behind the cut out umbrella image on the square reveal wheel base. (You may need to trim any acetate that sticks out beyond the card)
Stick acetate to back of square reveal wheel base where umbrella was cut from
Stick the acetate to the back

  7. On a piece of white card that's large enough to cut the reveal wheel from, use one of the finger daubers or a sponge and start to colour from the yellow ink pad. Then in turn use the other colours, to create splodges in a circle. I did light patches first then when I was happy that the patch was big enough to cut a reveal wheel from, and the colours roughly taking up a similar amount of space, I then went back over to add more ink and blend them slightly with the colour next to it. (Don't worry if it looks a little patchy. You can go back over as many time as you want until you are happy with it. Because the umbrella is quite small, it's unlikely you will see any patchiness)
Use finger dauber dipped in yellow ink to create a splodge on white card

Use the other colourful inks to create a circular rainbow

Go over the colours with more ink to make darker and blend at edges

make sure it's big enough to cut the reveal wheel from

  8. Cut the reveal wheel out of the rainbow you have just made along with the small arrow if you can fit it. Also cut the small wheel from the reveal wheel set but this can be from white card.
Rainbow effect reveal wheel plus colourful arrow and white backing circle

  9. Put the small brad through the centre of the large reveal wheel and then the small wheel. (Normally you would put the brad through the other way but the legs of the brad would probably show through the umbrella window)
put a small brad through the front of colourful wheel and then through smaller wheel

  10. Put double sided foam pads on the back of the small reveal wheel and then stick it centrally to the blank square reveal wheel base cut out in step 1. Put double sided foam pads all the way around the square as shown in the below photo, ensuring none of them are too close the the wheel
put double sided foam pads onto back of smaller wheel

Stick reveal wheel to second square base and then add double sided foam pads

  11. Now stick the reveal wheel square with umbrella on, ontop so the two squares line up exactly. You can now see the colour through the umbrella window
Stick the two reveal wheel square bases together

  12. Stick the dotty card onto the square card base. Then stick the reveal wheel squares ontop centrally.

  13. Glue the colourful arrow as shown on the below photo
On square white card base, stick dotty backing paper then square reveal wheel bases

The card is made. If you now turn the wheel where the arrow is, the umbrella will change colours. I absolutely love the interactive cards !
