Fathers day easel card

Using a Lili of the Valley stamp to create a circular easel card for dad

It's a bit late for me to be posting a fathers day card for you guys to make but it can be easily changed to a Happy Birthday card or why not get ahead and make your card for next year! I wanted to share a technique on how to stamp only part of an image from a rubber stamp, hence why I am posting this card anyway.

I originally wanted to make this a fancy square easel card but realised my fancy square dies were not quite big enough. However the circular card did work well and I don't think you get many circular cards as they normally do not stand up very well !

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • A4 sheet of dark blue card
  • A4 sheet of white card
  • Lili of the Valley 'bear on sofa' stamp (I've had this stamp for a while and Lili of the Valley now only sell digi stamps so if you would like to get something similar, have a look at their collection here)
  • Happy Fathers Day greeting (I used one from Lawn Fawn's Love Poems stamp set)
  • Black ink pad (mine came from Hobbycraft)
  • Black watercolour marker (I used docrafts Artiste pens)
  • Colouring medium of your choice (I used promarker pens - sandstone, cinnamon, cornflower, denim blue, Oatmeal, satin, warm grey 1 and cool grey 3)
  • Stamping aid such as Stamparatus or Misti
  • Nesting circle dies - one about 11 . 5 cm diameter and the other a little smaller at about 10 cm
  • Rectangle die about 6 . 5 cm by 3 cm (This depends on the size of your greeting stamp or you could just use a guillotine to cut a rectangle)
  • Double sided foam pads and glue

  1. Cut the A4 sheet of dark blue card in half so you have two rectangles measuring 15 cm by 21 cm

  2. Fold one of the rectangles in half. Lay the larger circular die onto the folded card and cut in a die cut machine to create your base card (get as much of the circle on the card as you can but some of it will overhang - make sure it overhangs the folded top of the card)

  3. Cut another large circle out of the other piece of blue card

  4. Stamp the bear stamp onto white card and colour in. Die cut it out using the slightly smaller circular die

  5. You should now have the following pieces
Pieces needed for making the easel card

  6. Fold the front half of the base card in half as per below photo.
Fold the front half of the base card in half, this creates the support

This image shows the folded front part of the card how it becomes the support

  7. Put glue on the lower half of the folded part of base card and stick the other blue circle to it ensuring the bottoms of the circles line up.

  8. Using foam pads stick the bear image to the blue circle added in point 7

  9. I then stamped just the tray with biscuits and cup onto another piece of white card. To stamp just a small part of a larger stamp, I find the best thing to do is put the stamp into a stamping aid such as a Stamparatus. Using the black watercolour brush marker, draw over the part of the stamp you wish to use and then stamp it onto your card. Do just small sections at a time as the ink dries and then it will not stamp onto your card (as it's in a stamping aid, you can keep re colouring the stamp and keep stamping as it will always stamp in the same place)
Use watercolour brush markers to colour only part of a stamp

  10. Stamp your greeting next to the image using black ink
Add your greeting next to the image

  11. Using the rectangle die or a guillotine, cut around your greeting image and phrase
Use a die or guillotine to cut out the greeting

  12. Using foam pads stick the greeting rectangle onto the bottom circle of the base card that the top half can then rest upto

There is the finished card. You could use any image for the main picture - I just love the easel cards as they stand well and are a bit different to the normal.
