Owl Card

How to make this cute shaped owl card

I love shaped cards - so this week I show you how to make a cute owl shaped card. You can use your favourite patterned papers too, to create the owls feather tummy. As it only needs small amounts of patterned paper it's a great way to use up your scraps too.
Shaped owl card

I wonder with halloween coming up if you could turn it into a spooky owl by making it in purple, black and orange colours. I feel that this card could be used for anyone and for any occasion just depending on what colours you use. You could even add a mortarboard to make it a graduation card.

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • A4 sheet of blue card
  • Blue patterned papers
  • Owl template (Click here to download)
  • Small amount of white, black and orange card
  • Three circle dies or punches - sizes 5 cm, 3 . 8 cm and 2 . 5 cm (or there about)
  • Square die or guillotine to be able to cut square roughly 2 . 8 cm
  • Small hole punch (not essential)
  • Glue

  1. Cut your sheet of blue card in half and then fold it in half to create your base card

  2. Use the owl body template and draw around it onto your base card ensure you line the left side of the owl with your card fold
Use my template to draw the owl shape onto the base card

  3. Hold your card together and cut through both layers to form your owl shape base card - ensure you do not cut through the lefthand side fold apart from the small amount at the bottom and top.

  4. Cut a piece of white card to 10 . 5 cm by 8 . 5 cm - this will be used to form your owls tummy

  5. Using the 2 . 5 cm circle die, cut 25 circles from patterned paper

  6. Glue the circles to the white rectangular card you cut out in step 4. Start at the bottom and make sure the circles overlap the bottom so you do not see any white card. I glued my circles on in a random manor but you could do one pattern per row etc

  7. Now glue a second row of circles to the white card. Offset them to the ones in the first row so the centre of each circle falls where two circles in the below row meet - see the below photo

  8. Continue in the same manor until you have filled the white card adding a row at a time. Note that I have only glued 3 circles to the top row - this is because we will trim this rectangle to a semi circle next and you won't need the extra circles

  9. Turn over the white card and trim off any circles that fall over the edge
Cut off the circles that overhang the rectangle card

  10. Now use the owls tummy template to draw the semi circle onto the back of the white card. Line the straight edge of the template with the bottom edge of the white card where full coverage of the circles are - this will ensure the top edge of the semi circle falls where the 3 circles are on the other side.

  11. Cut out the semi circle

  12. Glue the semi circle to the bottom of the owl base card lining it up with the straight edge of the bottom of the card

  13. Using dies cut the following:
    • 3 . 8 cm circle die - cut one in orange and two in white card. Cut the orange circle in half
    • 2 . 5 cm circle die - cut two in black. If you have a tiny hole punch - punch out a circle towards the edge of each black circle
    • 5 cm circle die - cut two in patterned paper
    • 2 . 8 cm square die - cut one in orange and cut it in half diagonally
Using various dies to cut out eyes and beak

  14. Glue the two orange semi circles to the bottom of the owl to create his feet

  15. Glue the orange triangle so the middle point just sits on the top of his tummy - this will be his beak (as per the below photo)
Glue the orange triangle onto the card to form his beak

  16. Glue the two large patterned circles so they overlap each other slightly and cover the top of the beak
Glue the two patterned circles above beak to form eyes

  17. Glue the two white circles centrally ontop of the patterned circles
Glue white circles centrally in patterned circles

  18. Glue the black circles onto the white circles. As you can see from the below photo's you can play around with where you glue the black circles to create different expressions
Glue black circles ontop of white circles to finish eyes

Or you could glue the black eyes in a different position to give character

This is your finished owl shaped card - he is very cute. You could glue a banner across his tummy with a greeting on or add a bowtie or bow to create extra character.
