3D Poinsettia

A very easy flower to make that can be used to decorate gifts and cards

I like to use craft paper to wrap my Christmas gifts and then decorate them with things I've made rather than using ribbon and pre-bought bows. I wondered if it would be possible to make a poinsettia from craft items I had in my stash. I was very pleased with the end result, so this week I show you how you can also make them.
3d poinsettia made using card cut with a leaf die

I used a 4 cm (excluding stem) by 2 . 5 cm leaf shape die to cut the petals, however you could cut them by hand - an egg sort of shape but with a bit more of a point at the narrowest end. My overall flower measures about 8 cm, however you could use bigger or smaller leaf dies to get different sized flowers.

At the end of the blog I show you some examples of what I have decorated with my poinsettias.

Follow the below link to find out how they were made

You will need
  • Red card
  • Green card
  • Leaf die (I got mine from The Range - just a cheap die in a Beach Leaf style)
  • 3 . 5 cm circle die cutter or punch (I used 1 3/8 inch scalloped circle punch from Stampin Up)
  • Multifaceted gold gem for the stamen (I used some bought from Stampin up but I show you how you could use other things to create the stamen in the blog below)
  • Glue

  1. Cut 6 leaf shapes from red card and 3 from green card

  2. Cut a 3 . 5 cm circle from green card
Cut 6 red leaves, 3 green leaves and a green circle from card

  3. Shape all of your leaves slightly by folding in half down the centre of the leaf and nipping the point end between your fingers
Shape each leaf by pinching the pointed top between your fingers
    Shape all leaves

  4. Put a little bit of glue on the base of the green leaves and glue them to the circle near the edge but spaced roughly equally as shown in the below photo
Glue 3 green leaves to the green circle - on edge at thirds

  5. Now glue 3 red leaves to the circle, towards the edge but in between the green leaves as shown in the below photo
Glue 3 red leaves in between the green leaves

  6. Snip the stems off the remaining 3 red leaves and then glue them to the circle so their bases meet in the centre and they are in-between the previously glued red leaves.
Trim the stems of remaining 3 red leaves

Glue remaining 3 red leaves in between other red leaves but their bases touch in the centre

  7. Now stick a gold multifaceted gem to the centre to finish off your poinsettia.
Put a gold multifaceted gem in the centre of the flower

You can see in the below photo, I have made 5 different stamens for my poinsettias - you may have a preference.
5 poinsettia flowers all with different stamens

Starting from top left and going clockwise:
  • Multifaceted gold gem from Stampin Up
  • Cut a 1 cm circle from gold card and then use 3d pearl effects in gold to put lots of dots in the circle
  • 1 cm gold mirror circle
  • 1 cm gold gem
  • Cut a 1 cm circle from gold card and then stick on mini gems
