3D snowman card

Learn how to make this 3D snowman with white circles cut from card

I saw something similar made in a craft magazine several years ago and always wanted to try it myself. So here is this weeks blog - a 3D snowman made from circles of white card folded and stitched together.

I think he looks rather cute. You could make them slightly bigger and back two of them together to make a hanging Christmas decoration.

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • 3 circular dies - 10 cm, 5 cm and 3 . 5m
  • White 5 inch square base card
  • White card
  • Piece of patterned card big enough to cut 10 cm circle from
  • Small amount of black and brown card
  • Black and orange colouring pens (I used Promarkers black and honeycomb)
  • Snow friends framelits die set by Stampin up - this is optional
  • Black thread (I used some black cross stitch thread)
  • Needle
  • Piece of sponge
  • Snowflake embossing plate - this is optional (I used a Sizzix Texturz plate called snowflakes)
  • Die cutting machine
  • Glue

  1. Using the 5 cm die cut 4 circles from white card and one using the 3 . 5 cm circular die
Cut 4 lots of 5cm circles from white card and one of 3.5cm

  2. Fold the 5cm white circles in half
Fold the 5cm circles in half

  3. Put the 4 folded circles together inside each other and lining up the fold lines. Using a needle, pierce holes in the fold line using a sponge as a protective layer behind.  Pierce through all 4 layers as per the below photo. I pierced 3 pairs of holes that had only 0 . 5 cm between them but spread evenly down the fold line. (I use an old scalpel handle with a needle locked into it)
Pierce 6 holes down the fold line through all 4 circles

  4. Keeping the four circles held together, thread the needle with black thread and put it from the back to the front in the top hole and leave a small tail of thread on the back
Use black thread to sew the circles together through the pierced holes

  5. Using a small piece of Sellotape, tape the tail of the thread onto the back of the circles
Sellotape the thread tail to the back

  6. Push the needle with black thread from the front to the back through the next hole down. Continue in this manner until you have threaded through all the holes and the needle with thread is now on the back of the circles.
The thread looks like the snowmans buttons

  7. Cut the thread leaving a small tail and Sellotape it to the back of the circles
Tape the end tail of thread to the back of the circles

  8. Cut a hat shape from black card and two arms from brown card. I used dies from Stampin Up's 'Snow friends framelits set' but if you don't have this set just cut some basic shapes

  9. Using coloured pens draw a carrot nose, eyes and mouth onto the 3 . 5 cm white card circle cut out in step 1
Draw a carrot nose, eyes and mouth onto the smaller circle

  10. I embossed my base card with a snowflake pattern but you can leave it blank if you do not have an embossing folder. I found it made the card look a little less plain
Embose the front of your base card

  11. Cut a 10 cm circle from patterned card and glue it centrally to the front of your base card
Cut a 10cm circle from patterned paper and glue to front of base card

  12. Glue each part of the snowman onto the patterned circle as per the below photo. The 3d tummy only needs glue on the back circle and once stuck to the card the other circles can be bent towards the centre creating the 3d shape
Glue the snowmen parts onto the patterned circle

I then made a similar one with blue tones. I think they both look fab.
