Learn how to make these cute name place cards with stamps
We normally have a house full of people at Christmas, so for the dining table I have always created name place cards to organise where people are sitting. This year is going to be different as due to covid we are not allowed to mix in high numbers. However, just because there are fewer of us, it's no excuse not to make the effort and decorate as we would do normally. So this week I will show you how to make these:
I've used two stamping and die sets from Stampin up but you can use any stamp sets you have in your collection as long as the stamp is no taller than 6 cm. It's easier if you have the matching dies but you could always use a craft knife instead - it will just take you a little longer :)
I've done these for Christmas but they can be made for any occasion by just changing the stamped image. It would be lovely to make a set for a wedding using a bride and groom image or maybe a bunch of flowers or wedding cake.
Follow the below link to find out how they was made
You will need
- Signs of Santa stamp and die set by Stampin Up
- Snow Place stamp and die set by Stampin Up
- White card
- Ink pads - black, red, green, brown and blue (I used a black ink pad from Hobbycraft and coloured ink pads from Stampin Up - rose red, garden green, chocolate chip, soft suede and island indigo)
- Colouring medium of your choice (I used Promarkers - satin, sandstone, cardinal red, mustard, cool grey 1, cool grey 3, black, ivory, forest green, honeycomb and blush)
- Ruler, pencil and rubber
- Glitter glue in a few colours
- 3d foam pads
- Glue
- Guillotine with scoring blade
- Die cutting machine
- Washi tape
- Cut the place card out of white card measuring 12 cm by 8 cm. Cut as many as you will need
- Using a pencil and a ruler draw a feint line across the middle of the place card where it will eventually be folded. We will rub this mark out later but need it for now as a guide line
- Stamp your image on the left or right side of the card so half of it is above the line and the other half below the line
- We are going to use the matching die to cut out the top half of the stamped image. I'm using a Sizzix machine which has a thick plate and then I put a cutting plate ontop. Line these two up. My cutting plates have a slight slant on the very end edge. Line up your pencil line on your place card with the top of the slant of the cutting plate and use some washi tape to hold in place (the lower half of your place card will be hanging off the cutting pads). Now place your die onto the stamped image and again use washi tape to hold in place. Put your second cutting plate ontop lining it up with the lower cutting plate and run through your die machine
(Sorry - don't know why I didn't take a photo of the penguin being cut - just got carried away! Hope you get the general idea though) - Because the lower half of your place card was hanging outside of the cutting plates, it doesn't cut. Your place card should now look like this:
(I did it again - didn't take a photo of the penguin! Sorry about that) - Put your place card onto your guillotine, lining up the pencil line with the cutting groove.
- Using a scoring blade, score either side of the image along the pencil line. You can now fold the top half of the place card backwards but leaving your image still standing up at the front
- Rub out any pencil line that can be seen on your image
- Colour in your images or stamp and cut out accessories to add to your place card images as I have done in the below photos
- For the elf, Santa and Mrs Claus, I have stamped the images again onto a different sheet of white card, coloured them in and then cut out certain parts to make decoupage pieces. For the elf I have cut out a hat. For Santa I have cut out a hat and his list and for Mrs Claus I have cut out her apron. After you have coloured in these pieces stick them to the place card images with 3d foam pads.
- I then used various coloured glitter glues to add a little sparkle to my place card images
- I used a corner punch to slightly round the bottoms and tops of the place card edges but you can leave them square
- You can then write on your names. My son has just started to do a little calligraphy, so he has done the one for me. If you don't fancy writing on them yourself, you can use alphabet stamps or peel offs to create the names you need
Have fun with this one. You can use any stamps on them to make them for different occasions such as weddings, Easter or birthdays.
