Less is more, circular card

A sweet little cactus birthday card

I decided I wanted to make the cactus card with a circular die from 'Swirly scribbles' thinlits die from Stampin up. Incase you do not have that particular die set I have also made a cactus card with a set of circular nesting dies. I will show you how to make both. (I actually prefer the one made using the nesting dies !)

You don't always have to cram your card full of decorations to make an impactful card. I sat down to make this weeks card and before I knew it, I had a 6 x 6 square card full of circles of different sizes and a small picture towards the bottom - it wasn't working! I removed everything and started again. I made the card smaller, used just one circle (in the case of the Swirly Scribbles die), the cactus image and greeting and I was finally happy with it.
Die cut frames and circles in various colours
All the circles I die cut out to make this card and then ended up not using
- not for this card anyway - always keep them for other cards !

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • Light green card
  • Brown card
  • White card
  • Happy Birthday greeting stamp (I used one from Stampin Up's Birthday Banners stamp set)
  • Bunch of banners dies from Stampin Up
  • Swirly scribbles thinlits dies (or to make the alternative card, 4 nesting circle dies roughly measuring 6 . 5 cm, 5 cm, 4cm and 2 . 5 cm)
  • Lawn Fawn's Year Ten stamp and die set (Cactus image)
  • Black and dark green ink pads (I used a black ink pad from Hobbycraft and the green one was mossy meadow from Stampin Up)
  • Stamping aid (I used Stamparatus by Stampin Up)
  • Colouring medium of your choice (I used promarkers - pear green and sandstone)
  • Small sponge
  • Glue and double sided foam pads
  • Guillotine
  • Die cutting machine

  1. Cut a rectangle from the light green card measuring 7 inches by 3 . 5 inches. Fold it in half to create a 3 . 5 inch square card base

  2. Using the largest swirly die from the 'Swirly Scribbles' die set, cut one from brown card. (If you are making the alternative card, die cut the 4 circle nesting dies out of brown card, placing them inside each other to create frames)

Use 4 small nesting circular dies to cut frames
Alternative card - place your nesting dies inside each other to cut out frames (Please note this photo shows 5 dies but you will only be using the 4 smallest ones)

3 circle frames cut using nesting dies
Alternative card - using the 4 circle nesting dies, it cuts out 3 frames

  3. Using black ink, stamp Happy Birthday and the cactus image onto white card

  4. Colour in the cactus then die cut him out

  5. Use the straight banner die from the 'Bunch of Banners' die set to cut out the Happy Birthday greeting as per the below image

  6. Dip the sponge into the green ink and use it to ink the edges of the birthday greeting banner

  7. Glue the brown swirly scribbles circular die cut centrally onto the base card, tucking the very end of the Happy birthday banner under the left side as per the below photo. (If you are making the alternative card, glue the 3 brown frames to the base card - the largest one first towards the bottom left of the card, the middle sized one towards the top right of the card and the smallest frame overlapping both sort of centrally towards bottom right. Don't forget to tuck the birthday greeting banner under the left side of the largest frame but leave it loose so it goes over the top of the other frames)
Attach the swirly circle to base card and add greeting banner

Alternative card - glue the first frame to the base card
Alternative card - largest frame placement

Alternative card - glue second frame to base card
Alternative card - middle sized frame placement

Alternative card - glue on the third frame to the base card
Alternative card - smallest frame placement

  8. Once the circle or circles are glued down then glue down the rest of your greeting banner

  9. stick the cactus to the bottom left of the base card using double sided foam pads

That's your finished card - less is sometimes more. Which one do you prefer?
