Woven Background Birthday Card

Weave a paper background to create an easy greeting card

I've used strips of coloured patterned papers to weave a background that I have then added my greeting to.

I've used two square dies to create a frame to hide the edges of the woven background but if you don't have any dies then just use strips of coloured card instead to create a frame. This card could be made with any coloured patterned or plain paper for the weaving and therefore make it for any occasion.

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made
You will need
  • Coloured patterned paper (I used the stripe paper from 6x6 paper pack 'Dots and Stripes' by My Favourite things)
  • White card
  • Purple card
  • 5 x 5inch base card
  • Square dies - one measuring 10 . 5 cm and the other measuring 8 cm
  • Happy Birthday greeting die
  • Candles dies (each candle about 4 . 5 cm high)
  • Guillotine
  • Double sided tape and glue
  • die cutting machine

  1. Cut 14 strips of paper from your coloured patterned paper measuring 4 inch by 0 . 5 inch.

  2. Cut a 4 inch square from white card

  3. Put a strip of double sided tape along the top edge of the white square piece of card
4 inch square card with double sided tape along top edge

  4. Stick your first coloured patterned strip so it lines up down the left hand edge of the white card as shown in the below photo. It will only be attached by the tape along the top)
attach a strip of paper vertically down left side

  5. Stick 7 further strips next to each other as per the below photo
Stick 8 strips of paper vertically on 4 inch white card

  6. You can now start weaving. These strips will go horizontally and will go under , over, under, over etc of the strips that you stuck to the white square. So take your first strip and go over, under, over, under etc then push it towards the top as per the below photo
Weave the first horizontal strip of paper

  7. The next strip will go the opposite to the previous one. So place it under the first strip, over next, under, over etc. I place it at the bottom of the white square as per the below photo as its easier to get the strip under the vertical strips and then move it up towards the strip placed in point 6.

It's easiest to weave in the strip at the bottom first
Move the strip upto the top

  8. Carry on weaving the remaining strips into the vertical strips always weaving it opposite to the previous strip.
Weave 6 horizontal strips of paper

  9. Glue the lower edge of the weaving to the white card underneath to hold it all in place
Glue the bottom of the weaving to the backing card

  10. Cut a frame from purple card by placing the smaller square die centrally within the larger one in your die cutting machine and run it through. (If you don't have these dies, cut 4 strips from purple card measuring 10.5 cm by 1 . 5 cm and glue them around the edge of your woven piece to cover the edges
Use 2 square dies to cut out a frame

  11. Die cut your greeting and 5 candle shapes. Depending on the size of your greeting you may not want to use the candle dies aswell. If you don't have a greeting die, you could stamp a greeting and cut it out into a banner shape

  12. Glue the greeting towards the top of the woven background and the 5 candles towards the bottom half
Glue all components to the front of the base card

This is your finished card. There are so many possibilities for this woven background. Just change the size of your strips of paper and you could turn it into a rectangle background instead of a square one. Why not try making a square woven piece, put glue behind the whole of your woven piece and stick it down to the white backing piece and then die cut it into a shape such as a heart or star.
