Stained Glass Card

Use dies to create a stained glass window effect card

I used Stampin Up's Stylish Stems die set to create this card. The die set includes dies to cut out the outside of the stamped image but also includes the dies to cut out the inside and it's this that I used in the card. It cuts out the inner part leaving a frame around each petal. I cut it out of black card so it really resembles what I think is traditional stained glass leading, however you would get different effects using other colours.

I then filled the petals within the stained glass image with petals cut out of different coloured card but this can be a little fiddly. Instead you could just colour in the different petals or just mount it on coloured card. I was originally thinking an ombre card would look lovely behind the black stained glass image or even silver or gold.

Tip - I cut my petals out of card as it is thicker and easier to glue in place than cutting it out of paper.

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • Stylish Stems die set by Stampin Up
  • Happy Birthday greeting stamp (I used Birthday Banners stamp set by Stampin Up)
  • Bunch of Banners Framlits die set by Stampin Up
  • Black ink pad
  • C6 white base card
  • Black, yellow, 3 shades of green and 3 shades of pink card
  • Rounding corner punch
  • Glue and double sided foam pads
  • Toothpick
  • Die cutting machine

  1. Cut a piece of black card to 14 cm high by 9 . 5 cm wide and round the corners using the rounding corner punch
Cut out black layer for your card and round the corners

  2. Using the stem and internal large and small flowers from the die set, cut them out of the black card as per the below photos
Place flowers and stem from Stylish Stems die set onto black card

Remove inner parts from die cut out leaving the stained glass image

  3. Glue this black card centrally to the base card
Glue stained glass image to the base card

  4. Cut the two flowers again in yellow card. Push out the central parts of the flowers and glue them into the stained glass black card on your base card
Cut flowers out of yellow card, punch out centres and glue into stained glass image

  5. Cut the stem in 3 different shades of green. Each time be careful to try and keep the cut out central die pieces in their correct positions so you know which piece will fit into the stained glass image - see below photos. Glue these cut out pieces into the stained glass effect image - I used the dark green as the stem, then a mixture of the lighter greens for the leaves. Where the infill is really small, ie the stem, use a toothpick to put glue into the image on the base card rather than glue on the back of the dark green stem
Die cut stems out of 3 shades of green card

Glue stem die cuts into stained glass image

  6. Cut both flowers out of 3 different shades of pink - use a toothpick to knock the bits out of the die but trying to keep them in order as per the below photos
Die cut the flowers again out of pink card

Push out the die cuts but try to keep them in die cut shape

  7. Glue the petals into the base card to form the flowers.  (I used petals from all 3 colours and just varied them across the flowers, however you could just make the flower out of one colour)
Glue the die cut petals into the stained glass image, mixing up the colours

  8. Using black ink, stamp your greeting onto some spare pink card and cut it out with a banner die. Using foam pads attach it to the bottom right of the base card.
Create a greeting and die cut it into banner shape

This card would look just as effective if you used felt pens to colour in the petals instead of sticking in the card die cuts. Or just mount it on coloured card which would then show through the stained glass cut out image.
