Snow Way! It's Christmas already?

Create this multi aperture card and decorate with cute characters

Create a card with real depth - yet it folds flat for easy posting. Your recipient will be surprised to see what's inside :)

The main reason for doing a blog on this card, is to show you how to make the base card itself. I've decorated it with stamped characters from 'Snow Place' by Stampin Up, however once you have made the base card, you can decorate it with whatever you have.

I made this card using two different sized oval dies but you could just as easily use shaped or plain rectangular dies. They just need to be different sizes. I made a second card using shaped rectangular dies and there is a picture of this one at the bottom of this page.

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • 2 sheets of blue A4 card
  • White card
  • White glittery card
  • Snow Place stamp set by Stampin Up
  • Snow Friends die set by Stampin Up
  • Snowflake patterned paper (I used a sheet from 'Let it Snow' 12x12 scrapbook pad by ArtStudio)
  • Two oval dies - the largest one about 11 cm high by 8 . 5 cm, the smaller one about 9 cm by 6 cm
  • Snowflake dies (2 different sizes if you have them)
  • Black, Blue, red and brown ink pads (my black ink pad came from The Range and the others were from Stampin Up - island indigo, cherry cobbler and soft suede)
  • Versamark ink pad
  • White embossing powder (I use opaque bright white super fine by Wow)
  • Heatgun
  • Colouring medium of your choice (I used promarker pens orange and red)
  • Die cutting machine
  • Guillotine including cutting and scoring blades
  • Double sided tape, glue and double sided foam pads

  1. Out of one piece of blue card cut a rectangle 19 cm wide by 14 cm (If you cut it so the 19cm is across the short width of the card, you can use the rest of the sheet in step 3).  I will call this rectangle A in further steps.

  2. Score rectangle A at 11 cm from one of the short edges. Fold at this point - this is your base card, the largest section will be the front and the shortest section the back.
Rectangle A - front and back of card
Black dotted line shows fold line

  3. Cut another rectangle from the left over blue card from step one - 14 cm high by 10 . 5 cm wide. This rectangle will be the inside aperture. (I will call it rectangle B in further steps)

  4. Score 5 mm in from each long side of rectangle B
Rectangle B the inside aperture section
Black dotted line shows 5mm fold lines

  5. Use the smaller oval die to cut out an oval centrally on rectangle B (Keep the oval that was cut out for the next step)
Die cut smaller oval die in rectangle B

  6. Using the versamark ink pad, stamp 'Snow Way! It's Christmas already' greeting centrally onto the oval. Cover it in embossing powder, knock off the excess and heat with a heatgun until the powder melts
Stamp greeting on small oval die cut

  7. Cut two snowflakes out of the white glitter card using the snowflake dies
Die cut two snowflakes from glittery white card

  8. Glue the edges of the snowflakes onto the oval
Glue two snowflakes to the blue oval die cut

  9. Cut a piece of snowflake patterned paper to 13 cm by 10 cm and glue it centrally to the front of rectangle A
Cover front of rectangle A with snowflake patterned paper

  10. Attach the oval, using double sided foam pads, centrally ontop of the snowflake patterned paper on the front rectangle A
Put blue oval ontop of snowflake patterned paper

  11. Cut another rectangle from the second sheet of blue card this time 21 . 6 cm wide by 14 cm tall. This will be the main inside of the card. (I will call it rectangle C in further steps)

  12. Score rectangle C from a short edge at 1 . 3 cm, 10 . 8 cm and 12 . 1 cm. Fold the rectangle along these score lines
Cut and score rectangle C - the main inside part of card
Black dotted line shows fold line

  13. Using the larger oval die, cut an oval from rectangle C centrally in the section that follows on from the 1 . 3 score line as per the below photo
Die cut larger oval out of rectangle C

  14. Turn rectangle C over. Cut a piece of snowflake patterned paper measuring 14 cm tall by 9 . 5 cm wide. Glue this paper to the section without the oval cut out of it as per the below photo
Glue rectangle of snowflake patterned paper to none oval section of rectangle C

  15. Put some double sided tape on the back smallest part of rectangle A as per the below photo.
Put double sided tape onto back of rectangle A - the smallest section
Double sided tape is shown by the dark red lines on rectangle A

  16. Stick rectangle C (the back of the snowflake patterned paper section) to rectangle A where the double sided tape is as per the below photo
Stick rectangle C to rectangle A

  17. Put thin double sided tape on the 5mm folded sections of rectangle B
Put thin double sided tape to both 5mm folded sections of rectangle B

  18. Stick the right hand 5mm section of rectangle B to rectangle C where the patterned paper ends within the small middle scored section as per the below photo's
stick right 5mm section of rectangle B to rectangle C

Glue rectangle B to rectangle C so it sits in the middle smallest folded section

  19. Stick the left hand 5 mm section of rectangle B to rectangle C in the last 1 . 3 cm scored section so the edges of both rectangles align
Glue the lefthand 5mm section of rectangle B to rectangle C's last scored section

Picture shows how the apertures are forming

  20. Put a piece of double sided tape on the back of the last 1 . 3 cm section of rectangle C
Put a strip of double sided tape to the 1.3cm scored section of rectangle C

  21. Fold over rectangle C so it forms a box that then touches rectangle A - the inside of the front cover. Stick this using the double sided tape added in step 19.
Fold rectangle C to form a box like shape

Glue 1.3cm scored section of rectangle C to inside of front cover of rectangle A

    Main card now complete.

  22. This is your base card completed and now it just needs decorating. I am using the 'Snow Place' stamp set. Using the black, red and brown ink pads, I stamped several items onto white card. I coloured in the penguins feet, beak and the snowmens noses. Die cut them out
Stamp, colour and die cut characters from Stampin Up's 'Snow Place' stamp set

  23. Use small amounts of glue to attach them to the different layers of the inside of the card to create the depth
Glue stamped characters to inside of card to different layers of apertures

This is your finished card. If you close the card, the inside parts will fold to the right making the card flat for postage. When you then open the card, it will straighten out the insides again so you can see all of the characters. The first time you fold it this way, you might need to ease it and crease it so it folds flat.
When you close card, the inside will fold to the right and it will make a flat card

I also made this card but using shaped rectangle dies instead.  This was the end result:
