Cut a snowflake from white paper to create a snowman's tummy
This card was inspired by the snowflake paper cutting technique that you normally do as a child - where you fold a piece of square paper then cut out shapes from the edges. I haven't done this for some years and it was very exciting to unfold the paper to see what sort of snowflake I had created.
The snowflake then becomes the snowman's snowy tummy. His head is made in a similar way to the gift wrap I made in last weeks blog. (If you didn't see that, click here - it makes such a fab gift wrap for a small gift or some chocolate)
Follow the below link to find out how the card was made
You will need
- White photocopier paper
- White, blue, black and orange card
- Snowflake patterned card or paper (I used a sheet from a scrapbooking pad called 'Let it snow' by artstudio)
- 'Snow Way' greeting stamp from 'Snow Place' stamp set by Stampin Up
- Versmark ink pad
- White embossing powder (I used Opaque bright white super fine embossing powder by WOW)
- Heatgun
- Two circle dies - larger one measuring about 9 cm in diameter and the smaller one measuring about 6 . 5 cm
- 1/2 inch circle punch
- Hole punch
- Guillotine with cutting and scoring blades
- Die cutting machine
- Glue and double sided foam pads
- From white card cut a rectangle that measures 21 cm by 20 cm. Fold it in half to create a DL card base which measures 21 cm tall by 10 cm wide
- Cut a piece of snowflake patterned card to 21 cm tall by 10 cm wide and glue it to the front of the base card
- Cut a piece of white photocopier paper to 8 cm square
- Fold the paper in half - point B to point A as shown in the below photo's
- Fold the paper in half and unfold it to find where the centre line is
- Fold the right hand bottom corner up to the top of the centre fold line so the right hand bottom fold now lies along the centre fold line
- Do the same with the left hand bottom corner
- Fold the right hand edge to the centre fold line
- Do the same with the left hand edge
- Fold in half along the centre fold line
- Cut the top points off
- Cut shapes from each of the edges - this is where you will create your unique snowflake pattern.
- Unfold the paper to reveal your snowflake. (You can flatten it by running an iron over the snowflake if you cover it with some fabric first, such as a tea towel - Don't have your iron too hot)
- Using the larger circle die, cut one from blue card
- Glue your snowflake to the blue circle - this will be the snowman's body
- Cut two rectangles from black card, one measuring 6 cm wide by 5 cm tall and the other measuring 8 cm wide by 1. 5 cm tall. Cut a rectangle from blue card measuring 6 cm wide by 3 cm tall. These will form the snowman's hat
- Using the versamark ink pad, stamp your greeting to the top of the larger black rectangle. Cover with white embossing powder, knock off the excess then heat with the heatgun until all the powder melts
- Glue the blue rectangle below the greeting on the larger black rectangle. (If you have used a different greeting that is smaller - then glue the blue rectangle to the black rectangle so the bottom edges align. Then ignore step 19)
- Turn this black rectangle over and cut off any of the blue card that extends below the black card
- Glue the other black rectangle ontop of the blue band so the lower edges meet and it overhangs equally on each side
- Using the smaller circle die, cut one from white card to become the snowman's head
- Glue the hat to the top of the head
- Cut two black circles using the 1/2 inch punch and glue to the snowman's head to be the eyes
- Use a hole punch to punch out two circles from white card. Glue these to the top of the black eyes
- Cut a rectangle from orange card measuring 1 cm by 2 cm. Cut this in half diagonally to become the nose. Glue one of the triangles to the face just below the eyes
- Cut 5 small circles from black card using the hole punch. Glue them to the snowman's face to become the smile
- Put double sided foam pads on the back of the snowman's head and body and attach them to the front of the base card. I put the head on a slight angle but you could just stick it on straight if you prefer
This is your finished card - quite cute isn't he? You could add buttons on his tummy and give him some arms if you wish. I preferred to keep it plain so you could see my snowflake paper cutting :)
