3D Decoupage Dog in Cake

How to turn a digital stamp into a 3d decoupage image for a birthday card

I will show you in this blog how to turn one image into 4 images and then how to turn them into a 3D image for a birthday card.
Decoupaged card created from a single digital stamped image

I've used a digital image of a dog bursting out of a birthday cake that I bought from LOTV (you can get it here), however you could use a block or clear cling stamp and just stamp it 4 times ontop a piece of white card.

My digital stamp was an outline image but you can get pre-coloured images from LOTV if you do not fancy colouring in.

The hardest part of this card is knowing what part of the image you wish to layer. Just play around with your image - you need to get the parts of the image that are closest to you as the top last layers. As you are printing these images (or stamping them) yourself, you can always re-print them if you weren't happy with your first attempt. There is no real right or wrong, just go with what looks appealing to yourself.

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • White A6 base card
  • White, dark pink and light pink card
  • Digital stamp of dog bursting out of cake (From LOTV - you can purchase it here)
  • Bunting die
  • Fancy edge circular die about 6 cm in diameter
  • Number dies (I've made this card as a 16th birthday card - you could omit this)
  • Colouring medium of your choice (I use promarker pens)
  • Guillotine with cutting blade
  • Die cutting machine
  • Glue and double sided foam pads
  • Scissors

  1. Download your image and reduce in size so you can print the image 4 times on one piece of A4 white card. You may have some software on your pc already which will help you do this such as Word or Publisher. I amended this one in Google Docs (which is free software if you have a google account) and will show you how I did it:
    • Open a blank document in Google Docs
    • Click on 'Insert' in the top tool bar followed by 'Image' then 'Upload from computer'. Locate the image on your pc. The image will now open in your blank document
    • Click on the image so it outlines it in blue, then select 'image options'
open up the image amendment options within google docs

    • The 'image options' drop down box will appear on the right hand side of the screen, click on the down arrow next to 'size and rotation'. Ensure there is a tick in the 'lock aspect ratio' box, then change the width to 3.15 inches. (the height will change automatically)
Amend the size of the image

    • Right click within the image and select 'copy'. Right click next to the image and click 'paste'. A second image will appear. Copy and paste twice more to get 4 of the same image on one sheet
copy and paste the reduced size image so you have 4 on one page

    • Print onto white card
4 images printed onto white card

  2. Colour in one of the images - this will be your base image (top left image). Only colour in parts of the other images that you intend to layer up as you will need to cut them out in the next step. To decide what bits of the image you will layer, work on which bits are closest to you to create that 3d look. So in the case of my dog image. the first layered image will be the first and second tier of cake and the dogs head (bottom left image). The third layer will be the just the first layer of cake and the dogs nose (bottom right image). The last layer I decided to just do the three candles on the first tier of cake (top right image).
    Colour in the images

  3. Cut round the base image in a rectangle shape (roughly 11 . 5 cm by 8 cm) . Cut the other images out that you have coloured in (see the photo below as an idea)
    Cut out the images

  4. Put double sided foam pads on the back of the image parts (but do not remove the tab off the bottom of the foam pad) and lay them ontop of the base image to get an idea of whether it works or not. Do not stick them down at this stage. If you are not happy with how the image is looking, remove parts that you think do not work in making it look like it's jumping out at you or add to it
Lay the layers onto base image to check if you were happy with the look

  5. Cut a piece of dark pink card to 12 . 5 cm by 9 cm and a piece of light pink card to 13 . 5 cm by 10 cm. Layer them up and stick them to the base card as follows:
Glue some rectangle layers onto base card

  6. Use the decorative edge circle die to cut out a circle from light pink card. Glue it to the bottom right hand corner of the card as follows:
Die cut a circle and glue to bottom right of base card

  7. Glue the base image of the dog in the cake ontop of the light pink rectangle
Glue base image of the dog ontop of the rectangles on base card

  8. Now stick the layered image pieces in order onto your base image by taking the tab off the bottom of the double sided foam pads
Use double sided foam pads to stick the layers of dog image to the base image

  9. Cut some bunting out of dark pink card and stick to the top of your card. I used double sided foam pads to raise it off the card a little
Glue some die cut bunting to the top of the card

  10. If you are going to add an age to the greeting card, cut the number/s out of dark pink card and glue to the circle
Die cut age and glue to the circle on base card
