Balloons Birthday Card

Use a die to cut out shapes and show some pretty paper through them to make this wonderful birthday card

I've used two different shaped birthday balloon dies to make windows on plain card for some pretty patterned paper to show through.

This is a really easy card to make and can be adapted quickly by using different shaped dies such as stars, flowers or butterflies. Just remember you will only be left with the outline of the image so try to choose a fairly simple shaped die.

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • White card (fairly thick)
  • Patterned paper or card (I used a sheet from a 'Victorian Roses' scrapbooking pad by Craft Sensations)
  • Balloon dies (Mine were Quickutz dies)
  • Greeting stamp (I used 'Happiest Birthday' stamp from Stampin Up's 'Cool Treats' stamp set)
  • Ink pad (I used Island indigo from Stampin Up)
  • Die cutting machine
  • Stamping aid (I used Stamparatus by Stampin Up - this equipment is not essential but does help with placing the greeting stamp on your card)
  • Guillotine with scoring and cutting blades
  • Double sided tape or glue and double sided foam pads

  1. Cut a piece of thick white card to 17 . 8 cm high by 25 cm width. Fold in half so you end up with a base card 17.8 cm high by 12 . 5 cm wide

  2. Cover the front of the card with your patterned paper

  3. Cut a piece of white card 17 . 8 cm high by 10 . 5 cm wide

  4. Use your dies to cut balloon shapes down the right hand side of the piece of white card that was cut out in step 3. Make sure they do not touch the edge of the card or each other. I am cutting them on the back of the card as these quickutz dies are square and have tabs on them which mark my card. By cutting them on the back of the thick card - when I turn the card over, the marks do not show on the front
Die cut the balloons randomly down right hand side of card

My dies mark the card, so I cut on the reverse side
You can see in this photo how the dies mark the card -
square image around the thin balloon

Quickutz dies that I used tend to leave square imprints on card
Because the dies are square, I often get a square embossed around the die cut

As I have used thick card, when I turn the card over the marks do not show on front
Turn the card over to reveal balloons cut on front.  Because I have used thick card,
the square imprints are not seen from the front

  5. Stamp your greeting onto the front of the card
Stamped 'Happiest Birthday' using blue ink next to the balloons

  6. Put double sided foam pads all over the back of the card and stick it centrally to the front of the base card

That's your card complete. Like I said, it is simple to make and can easily be adapted using different dies. I have made one using leaf dies:
