Lacy Birthday Cake

Use any lacy border die you have to create this really pretty cake card

I've got a few lacy border dies and I very rarely use them. So this week I wondered what I could make using the lacy border die as the main part of my card - the answer was a cake!
Birthday cake made up from die cut lacy borders

You can use any lacy border die or use lots of different ones to create the cake shape. If you don't have any lacy border dies, then just cut some thin rectangles and layer them in the same way.

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • Lacy border die
  • 5 different shades of pink card
  • White DL base card (or make one like I did - cut a piece of A4 white card to 20 cm wide by 21 cm high and fold in half to form 21 cm high by 10 cm wide card)
  • Candle dies
  • Pink ink pad (I used melon mambo by Stampin Up)
  • Happiest Birthday greeting stamp (from 'Cool Treats' stamp set by Stampin Up)
  • 'Cake is the answer' and 'who cares what the question is!' stamps from 'Piece of Cake' stamp set by Stampin Up
  • Guillotine
  • Double sided tape and double sided foam pads

  1. Cut a piece of pale pink card to 20 cm by 9 cm and stick centrally on the front of the DL base card

  2. Stamp the greetings onto the base card using a pink ink pad, so that Happiest Birthday is near the top and 'cake is the answer' is just below it. Stamp 'Who cares what the question is!' at the bottom of the card
Cover the base card in light pink card and stamp greetings

  3. Use the lacy border die to cut 2 strips from each of 4 different colour of pink cards
Die cut 8 lacy borders from varying shades of pink card

  4. Cut an 8 cm square from pale pink card

  5. Use thin double sided tape to stick one of the darkest pink lacy borders to the bottom of the square so the bottom edge of the lace lays on the bottom edge of the square as per the following photo:
Stick the first lacy edge border to bottom of 8cm square card

  6. Stick the next dark pink lacy border ontop so the bottom edge lays over the previous lacy border edge as per the following photo:
Layer the second lacy border above the first one

  7. Keep repeating step 6 working through the lacy border edges, darkest to lightest until the square is nearly covered
Stick all lacy borders to square graduating from dark pink at bottom to light at the top

  8. Turn the square over. The lacy border edges hang over the square card. Using scissors cut the overhang off
Turn square over and cut off overhanging lacy borders

Cut lacy borders that extend on each side of square card
    Cut off overhanging lacy borders

Cut away any of the square card that shows at the top of the lacy border

  9. Use double sided foam pads to stick the square to the base card just above 'Who cares what the question is!' stamped greeting

  10. Die cut two candles and attach to the base card using double sided foam pads so they sit just above the square - like candles on a cake!
