Tea Cup Gift Holder

Use some pretty decorative card to make a holder for a tea cup gift package

This week I thought I'd make a wrapper so you can gift a tea cup filled with homemade biscuits and a few individually wrapped tea bags. It makes a brilliant little gift for someone feeling under the weather, having a bad time at the moment or just needs a little gift to say hello. :)

You can buy some really pretty and fairly inexpensive cups and you can fill it with hot chocolate sachets, sweets or whatever your friend may like.

Follow the below link to find out how the wrapper was made:

You will need
  • Pretty cup filled with whatever gifts you wish to use (don't go for anything too tall or it may not fit in the holder)
  • Patterned 12 x 12 scrapbooking card (I used some sheets from a scrapbooking pad called 'Soft Romance' by Craft Sensations)
  • Coordinating paper/card, embellishments and dies to decorate
  • Rectangle die about 6 . 5 cm by 3 cm
  • Craft knife
  • Guillotine with cutting and scoring blades
  • Glue and strong double sided tape

  1. First get some measurements from your cup:
    • Measurement A - width across the top of your cup (mine measured 10 cm)
Measure across top of your cup

    • Measurement B - width across the bottom of your cup (mine measured just above 6 cm so I rounded it upto 6 . 5cm)
Measure across bottom of your cup

    •  Measurement C - height of cup (mine measured 10 cm)
Measure the height of your cup

  2. The wrapper will be made up of two pieces of card - one for the front and one for the back and they will be joined under the cup (the base) and above the cup (the handle).  Make sure your pattern runs the right way up when you cut these rectangles out.  From the measurements you took in step 1, you need to cut your card as follows:

The width of card you need will be measurement A plus 1 cm. For me this will be 10 cm + 1 cm = 11 cm.

The height of the card will be measurement C plus measurement C (this allows for space above the cup in the gift wrap) plus measurement B plus 5 cm for the top handle part of the gift wrap. For my cup this would be 10 cm + 10 cm + 6 . 5 cm + 5 cm = 31.5 cm. Obviously scrapbooking card is only about 30 cm in height. I will therefore just use the whole length of a piece of scrapbooking card and have a little less space for my gifts within the cup.

Therefore I need to cut two rectangles measuring 11 cm wide by 30 cm high from pieces of patterned card
Cut two rectangles of patterned card

  3. Score both pieces of card the same - 5 cm from one of the short edges (this will be the top of your gift wrapper) and measurement B from the other short edge (this will be the base of your gift bag). (So for me, I scored 5 cm from the top edge and 6 . 5 cm from the bottom edge of both rectangles of card)

  4. Cut 2 pieces of corresponding patterned card to 5 cm high by measurement A plus 1 cm (for me this is 11 cm).   Glue this card to the tops of the long strips of card you cut out in step 2
Add 5 cm depth of corresponding patterned paper to the top

  5. Use the rectangular die to cut a rectangle centrally from one of the tops of the gift wrapper to make a handle
Cut a rectangle for a handle in one of the strips of card

  6. Put glue on the reverse of this handle part down to the 5 cm score line and stick to the back of the other long strip of wrapper so both handles are at the top and both have their right sides of patterns face out
Put glue on the back of the handle piece

Stick the two strips together with patterns facing out

  7. Use the craft knife to cut the rectangle through the second layer of wrapper, using the rectangle cut out in step 5 as a guide for your knife.  You will then have a hole for your carry handle right through the top of your wrapper
Using the rectangle die cut out as a guide, cut right through

You now have a handle right through top of your wrapper

  8. Fold along the bottom score lines. Use double sided tape to stick one ontop of the other to form the base of the wrapper
Fold along bottom score line and glue the two pieces ontop of each other

  9. Your wrapper is now complete and you just slide your cup full of goodies into the wrapper
Your cup will now fit snuggly into the wrapper

Fill the cup with goodies and gift. You can add more decorations to the wrapper

You can add extra decoration, greeting or tag to your wrapper.

I added a piece of the corresponding card to the front top just below the handle with a lace border to it. Then used the same corresponding card and cut a scalloped circle which I stuck further down the wrapper. It's now ready for me to decide when I am going to gift this and all I need to do is to add a greeting.
