Origami Gift Box

Make a small gift box by folding a couple of square pieces of paper

This gift box is made up of two parts, a lid and a base. Both made in the same way from square pieces of paper. It doesn't require any gluing - just folding.

The origami gift box is made of two parts, the lid and a base

I've used Christmas wrapping paper to make this box. It could be a last minute wrap for a gift or maybe you could make them for Christmas table decorations (my dog doesn't like the cracker bangs, so I make little gift boxes instead and put the joke, hat, chocolate etc into the gift box).

I've been making these boxes since I was little and once you know how to make them you will never forget. You can make them for any occaision using different papers and in different sizes - just make sure the starting base square is a tad smaller than the lid square (in my example below, I've made the starting base square a centimeter smaller than the lid)

The internal dimensions of the box made in this blog is 7 cm square and just short of 3 . 5 cm deep

You can use almost any type of paper - just make sure it can hold a fold and it's not too thick.

Follow the below link to find out how the box was made

You will need
  • Paper
  • Guillotine with cutting blade

For the Instructions I have used printer paper and have drawn dotted lines on it to show you where the fold lines are

  1. Cut a piece of paper to 21 cm square (this will form your lid)
Start with a square piece of paper 21cm square

  2. Fold the square in half to form a triangle. Unfold
Fold the square in half to form a triangle

Unfold. There will now be a crease line across the middle

  3. Turn the square round and fold in half the other way. Unfold
Turn the square 90 degrees clockwise

Fold in half again to form a triangle

    Unfold

  4. Fold the bottom point upto the centre. Fold the other points to the centre. Unfold all
Fold the bottom point to the centre

Fold all points to the centre

    Unfold

  5. Fold the bottom point upto the fold line made in point 4 (shown in the below photo by the red dotted line). Fold the other points to their respective red dotted lines. Unfold
Fold the bottom point to the next crease line up

Fold all points in the same way

    Unfold the points

  6. Fold the bottom point up past the centre line to the next red dotted line shown in the below photo. Unfold. Repeat this step with the other points - one at a time.
Fold bottom point past centre mark to next crease line up

    Unfold

Repeat with other points one at a time

  7. Now the creasing has all been completed, we will now start to mold the box.  Fold the top and bottom points to the centre.  Do not unfold
Fold top and bottom points to the centre. Do not unfold

  8. Fold the top section down to the centre (use the previous crease lines as guides). Repeat with the bottom section folding it upwards to the centre. Slightly unfold these so they stand upright and start to form the box sides
Fold top line down to the centre line

Fold bottom section up to the centre line

Unfold the last fold slightly so it forms the box sides

  9. There will be a square along these sides that has a diagonal fold line across it (see the yellow dotted line in the below photo). Fold the end of the box upwards so the side folds along this diagonal line
Fold right end upwards along the diagonal crease line on the side of the box

Repeat with other side so the end of the box is now pointing upwards

The end of the box is now pointing upwards

  10. The end will now be pointing upwards. Fold it down so the triangle point ends up in the centre of the box
Fold the end down into the box so the triangle meets at the centre

  11. Repeat steps 9 to 10 for the other end of the box
Fold the other end along the diagonal side creases

    Fold the end downwards

Crease along the edge of the box

Fold the top down so it lines up with the other edges

Fold the base down so the triangle meets the centre

  12. This is your lid completed. Cut another square piece of paper to make your base but make it 20 cm square this time (1 cm shorter so it fits within the lid). Repeat all the folding steps above 1 to 11
    Lid of box completed

Repeat all steps with a square of paper 1cm shorter to form the base

You now have a lid and a base. Just slot them together to form your box
Slot base into lid to complete the box

My Christmas gift box was made in the same way but with wrapping paper
