Wrapping Paper Robin

Making a card from some really pretty wrapping paper

I know Christmas seems like ages ago now and we are already half way through January but I was tidying my desk and found some wrapping paper I had saved from Christmas. It was such pretty wrapping paper that I want to show you how to make a beautiful card quite quickly from it. This particular card is a Christmas card but you could make a similar card using birthday or celebration wrapping paper.

I'm not sure if I have ever mentioned - I like to get my Christmas cards made in January! I know it's early, but the time leading upto Christmas gets so manic and I'm still in Christmas mood in January so I get them done early. I make quite a few Christmas cards each year and I've left making them till October/ November time and run out of time and they never turn out how I would like them to as they are rushed. At least by making them in January, I can take a bit of time and if I need to order items such as card, there's no rush to find some.

Not only that, these cards are made from some wrapping paper I salvaged from Christmas - I need to use it now before it becomes all creased and crumpled !  Isn't it good to recycle?

I've also used a bit of the paper to cover the front of a notebook. This is a notebook that I use for tracking Christmas gifts. As I buy items, I mark it against the people I need to buy for and any ideas, I can also note down. I do buy gifts all year - not purposefully looking, but sometimes you just stumble across a perfect item for someone whilst on holiday for example. I therefore cover my little notebook in Christmassy paper so I don't get it lost amongst my other little notebooks.

I have made some cards using some birthday wrapping paper in the past - if you missed this click here to be taken to the page

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made:

You will need

  • Wrapping paper
  • Green and gold card (or what ever corresponds with the paper you have chosen)
  • Two nesting circle dies, about 1 cm in diameter difference between them (I made 2 cards, one with larger circle - this used 9 cm and 7 . 5 cm diameter circle dies, and one with smaller circle - this used 7 . 5 cm and 6 . 5 cm diameter circle dies)
  • Gold 'Merry Christmas' peel offs
  • Gold holly leaves peel offs
  • Guillotine with cutting and scoring blades
  • Rounding corner punch
  • Die cutting machine
  • Glue

  1. Cut a sheet of green A4 card to 21 cm by 10 . 5 cm. Score at 10 . 5 cm along long length and fold to create a square base card
Make a 10.5cm square base card out of green card

  2. Use the rounding corner punch to round all 4 corners of the base card
Use a rounding corner punch to round all the base card corners

  3. Use the smaller circle die to cut a piece from the wrapping paper. Most nesting dies are hollow in the centre so you can see what part of the picture you are die cutting out

  4. Use the larger circle die to cut a circle from gold card

  5. Glue the picture circle to the centre of the gold circle, then glue this centrally on the front of the base card
Glued the robin picture to centre of gold circle and then glue to base card

  6. Put your peel off greeting in the lower right hand corner of the base card
Add a peel off greeting to bottom right hand corner

  7. This could be your finished card, but I've then added some gold peel off holly leaves to the other 3 corners of the base card
Add holly peel offs to the other 3 corners of base card

To cover the front of my notepad, I measured the front of the notepad then cut a piece of wrapping paper slightly bigger. I put double sided tape around the edge of the front of the pad and stuck the paper on. Turn the front page over and cut away any paper overhang.
