Topper Card

Make a birthday card using a bought topper

My friend gave me a bag lot of toppers and pre printed papers that she could no longer use. So I decided this weeks card would be made using one of these toppers. I don't know if you can get this particular topper any more, but I hope you can get inspiration from how this card has been made to make a card yourself using a topper from your own craft stash.

Toppers are not very expensive and I have seen them for sale at local craft fairs and a local shop called The Range. There are often 6 or more toppers on one sheet of A4 card and can be the same image or a sheet of different images. This is what makes them perfect for crafters and as the images are normally coloured - so no panicking about having to colour in a stamped image.

This card shows how you can use a stamp to create a background which allows a rather plain background to become patterned and to match the other features of your card.  In my example, I remembered having a lavender stamp in my stash so used this to match the image in the topper.

My mum made a card at the same time with the same topper - you can see her card at the bottom of this post. You will see how different the cards are and therefore how versatile toppers can be.

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • Topper (the one I used was a square image about 9cm square)
  • White and purple card
  • Versamark and purple ink pad
  • Rounding corner punch
  • Lavender image stamp (I used one from Dear Doily stamp set by Stampin Up)
  • Happy Birthday greeting stamp (I used one from Beautiful Bouquet stamp set by Stampin Up)
  • Glue and double sided foam pads

  1. Use the rounding corner punch to round the corners of the topper
Round the corners of the square topper

  2. Use the purple ink pad to stamp the greeting onto the topper
Stampe the greeting onto the top corner of the topper

  3. Cut a piece of purple card to 11 cm wide by 16 cm high and use the rounding corner punch to round the corners
Cut a rectangle from purple card to use as a layer

  4. Using the versamark ink pad, stamp the lavendar sprig at the top of the purple card and one at the bottom of the card (versamark ink on a dark coloured card will show up really well. However if your card is of a lighter colour, you may need to use a coloured ink pad instead)
Stamp the lavender sprig at the top and bottom of the purple rectangle

  5. Cut a piece of white card to 17 . 5 cm high by 25 cm then fold in half to create the base card

  6. Use the purple ink pad and stamp the head of the lavendar around the edge of the front of the base card
Stamp the head of the lavender sprig around the edge of the base card in purple ink

  7. Glue the purple rectangle centrally to the base card

  8. Use double sided foam pads to attach the topper centrally to the purple rectangle

This is the card my mum made using the same topper, stamp set and ink pads.  They look so different but it's using the same imgredients :)
