Good Luck Cat

Make a good luck card with a cat peeking from the inside of the card

My friend is starting a new job soon and I wanted to make her a card to celebrate. That's when I realised I didn't have any job type images! Oh well, she really loves cats so I am hoping she loves this card.

How cute is this card with a little cat peeking from the inside of the card!

The small window is cut using a square die but you do not want to cut the bottom of it.  Therefore you run it only part way through your die cutting machine.  I have an A4 die cutting machine so I can run my open card through the machine across the width of the cutting plate (my card has a left hand folded edge).  However if your machine is smaller than A4, please treat your card as a tent fold card (top folded edge).  Position your square die appropriately (as per below photo) and run through your machine with the back edge of the card first and still stop when the lower edge of the die is under the rollers.

Follow the below link to find out how the card was made

You will need
  • 10 cm square white base card
  • Mid and light purple slightly patterned card/paper (I used 2 pieces from Watercolor Wishes paper pack by Lawn Fawn)
  • Peek-a-boo cat stamp and die set by Crafters Companion
  • 4 cm square die
  • Colouring medium of your choice (I used Promarker pens - cool grey 2, pale pink and amethyst)
  • Black ink pad
  • Silver Good Luck wording peel-off
  • Silver lines peel-offs
  • Washi tape (doesn't matter what pattern or size - it's only needed to hold a die down)
  • Craft knife, ruler and scissors
  • Die cutting machine
  • Guillotine
  • Glue

  1. Cut a mid purple piece of card/paper to 10 cm square and glue to the front of the base card
Cover the front of a 10cm square card with purple card/paper

  2. On the inside front of the base card, line up the square die, slightly higher than centre. Put a piece of washi tape over the bottom of the square die. Run it through your die cutting machine but stop when the washi tape is centrally under the rollers of your die machine (normally the piece under the handle). Basically you want to cut about 3/4 of the square but not cut the bottom line. I have an A4 die cutting machine, you may need to treat your card as a tent fold card if your die cutting machine is smaller (see instructions in description at top of the page)
Line a square die on inside front of card

Hold the die down with a piece of washi tape

Make sure the cat die fits the space
Lay the cat head die into the square to check that it will fit, but
remove it before running the square die through the die cutting machine

Run the square die through machine part way so it doesn't cut the lower edge

  3. Line the cat die from the Peek-a-boo stamp and die set so that it nearly touches the uncut edge of the square just cut in step 2. Add some washi tape if needed to hold it in place then run it through your die cutting machine.
Line the peek-a-boo cat head die at the bottom of the square

  4. The cat die may not cut to the edges of the square. You may need to use a craft knife and ruler to extend the lines off the cat die to the edge of the square so that section pops out
Use ruler and craft knife to join the square to the cat die

You should then have a square with a cats head at the bottom

You should then have a square with a cats head at the bottom

  5. Cut a piece of light purple card to 10 cm square and stick to the inside back of the card, so it can be seen through the window just cut out
Glue a pale purple piece of card to the inside back of base card

  6. Stamp the face and back of the cat onto white card with black ink

  7. Colour in the images
Stamp and colour the cat head and body

  8. Use the cat die to cut around the top of both cat images, then use a pair of scissors to cut out the ramaining parts of the images leaving a thin white line around them
Use cat head die to cut round the cats head

Use cat head die to cut out around head of back of cat

Top parts of both cats are now die cut

Use scissors to cut around rest of cat

  9. Glue the cat face to the front of the card over the cat shape that is in the window
Glue cat head of cat head shape in window

  10. Glue the back of the cat on the inside front of the card so the cats head is over the cat shape in the window
Glue cat body to inside front of card so cat head is over cat shape in window

  11. Use the 4 cm square die to cut a piece of mid purple card and glue below the cat so it looks like a step it is standing on. Just cut any part away that overhangs the bottom of the card
Die cut a square for cat to stand on

Trim away bottom of square that overhangs bottom of card

  12. Add the 'Good Luck' peel-off to the bottom right of the front of the card
Stick Good Luck peel off to bottom right on front of card

  13. Cut strips of peel-off's down to size to create a frame around the window
Use line peel-offs to create a frame around the window
